- A fractional CMO is a senior marketing executive you hire part time, usually for a set number of hours each month.
- The best fit is an established business, often with $1.5 million to $5 million in annual sales, that is spending on marketing but has no one senior leading it.
- In BC, fractional CMOs typically charge $150 to $500 an hour, or roughly $5,000 to $15,000 a month on retainer.
- Choose based on the size and type of business they have worked with, whether they can execute as well as advise, and how they will measure results.
Is your business ready for one?
A fractional CMO makes the most sense when your business has outgrown do-it-yourself marketing but can’t yet justify a full-time marketing executive.
In my experience, that usually looks like a business with $1.5 million to $5 million in annual sales, a small team, and a marketing budget that is being spent without a clear plan behind it.
You are probably ready if:
- You spend money on marketing every month but can’t say with confidence what is working.
- You have an agency, a coordinator or a few freelancers, and nobody senior directing them.
- The owner is still making most marketing decisions and it is taking time away from running the business.
- You are planning a rebrand, a new location, a new market or an acquisition.
- Growth has stalled and you suspect the problem is positioning rather than advertising.
You may not be ready yet if your business is under about $1 million in sales, you have no marketing budget beyond the fee itself, or you mainly need someone to post on social media. In those cases, a good freelancer or a marketing coach will usually give you better value.
What it costs.
Pricing varies with seniority, specialty and how many hours you need. These are typical 2026 ranges for British Columbia, compared with the cost of hiring a full-time executive.
Market ranges are based on published 2026 Canadian fractional CMO pricing surveys, including this regional breakdown. Your actual cost depends on scope. A good fractional CMO will agree on hours and deliverables with you before any work begins.
The four types you’ll meet.
“Fractional CMO” is a newer title in Canada, and people with very different backgrounds use it. Knowing which type you are talking to makes it much easier to judge fit.
Startup and tech growth specialists
Usually from SaaS or venture-backed companies, and strong on demand generation, funnels and investor reporting. Best for funded startups and tech companies. Watch for playbooks that don’t translate to local, owner-run businesses.
Agency-backed fractional teams
A marketing agency that offers a senior strategist on a set schedule, with its own team doing the work. Best for businesses that want one package from one supplier. Watch for recommendations that steer your budget toward the agency’s own services.
Independent senior strategists
One experienced marketing leader who works directly with you, directs your team and vendors, and is not tied to selling any one channel. Best for established small and mid-sized businesses that need both a plan and someone to lead it. Watch for limited capacity, since most independents only take on a few clients at a time.
Channel specialists using the CMO title
Skilled marketers in one area, such as paid ads, social media or SEO, who now call themselves fractional CMOs. Best for businesses that mainly need that one channel done well. Watch for a lack of experience with brand, positioning, budgets and leading people.
For transparency, TaylorMade Ideas is an independent senior strategist (type 03). I have worked in radio, television, publishing, PR and digital marketing for more than 25 years, and I can lead the work or do it myself.
Which option fits your business?
Many businesses combine these. A common setup is a fractional CMO who sets the plan and directs an agency or freelancers who carry out specific pieces of it. See how my fractional CMO service works.
Ten questions to ask.
- What size of business do you usually work with, and can you give me an example close to mine?
- Have you worked in my industry, or in one with a similar sales cycle?
- Will you set the strategy only, or can you also lead my team and do some of the work yourself?
- How many hours a month do you recommend for my situation, and why?
- What will you deliver in the first 90 days?
- How will we measure success, and how often will you report to me?
- Do you earn commissions or markups on any agencies, tools or media you recommend?
- How do you work with my existing agency, staff or freelancers?
- Can you meet in person when it matters, or is it video only?
- What happens if we want to scale the hours up, down or end the arrangement?
Five red flags.
A package before a conversation.
If pricing and deliverables are fixed before anyone understands your business, you are buying a product, not leadership.
Only one channel on the menu.
A true CMO recommends what your business needs, whether that is PR, sponsorships, advertising or fixing your sales process.
Success measured in clicks and likes.
Look for someone who talks about leads, sales, margin and brand strength.
Long lock-in contracts.
Fractional work should flex with your needs. A short notice period is reasonable, and a year-long commitment up front usually is not.
No references at your level.
Experience with global brands or tiny startups doesn’t always translate to a $3 million family business. Ask to speak with a client similar to you.
Common questions.
How much does a fractional CMO cost in BC?
Most fractional CMOs in British Columbia charge between $150 and $500 an hour, or roughly $5,000 to $15,000 a month on retainer. That compares with $230,000 or more a year for a full-time CMO once salary, benefits and payroll costs are included.
What size of business needs a fractional CMO?
Fractional CMOs are usually the best fit for established businesses with about $1.5 million to $5 million in annual sales. These companies are spending on marketing and often have staff or agencies, but no senior marketing leader.
How many hours a month does a fractional CMO work?
Most engagements run from 8 to 30 hours a month. Advisory work sits at the low end, while hands-on leadership during a rebrand or growth push sits at the high end.
Should I hire a fractional CMO or a marketing agency?
Hire a fractional CMO when you need someone to decide what to do and lead it. Hire an agency when you already know what you need done in a specific channel. Many businesses use both, with the fractional CMO directing the agency.
Is there a fractional CMO in the Okanagan?
Yes. TaylorMade Ideas is an independent fractional CMO practice based in the Okanagan Valley, led by Jennifer Taylor, APR. I meet in person with businesses in Kelowna, Penticton, Summerland and Vernon. Learn about fractional CMO services in the Okanagan.
How long should a fractional CMO engagement last?
Plan on at least six months to see meaningful results, since the first quarter is usually spent on research, strategy and fixing the basics. Many businesses keep a fractional CMO for several years and adjust the hours as they grow.
